BRCC Author Talk Series
Starting in 2023, Blue Ridge Community College welcomed regional authors to campus as part of a budding lecture series. When tasked with creating posters for each author talk, we decided to lean into genre conventions, invoking the gothic drama of vintage pulp horror paperbacks for Theresa Bane’s discussion on Halloween’s historic roots, and playing with Atomic Age kaiju kitsch for Dr. Jason Barr’s lecture on the relationship between monsters and man in pop culture.
We sourced early 20th century Halloween cards and late 1960s dime store novels in the vein of Paperback Library Gothics as inspiration for this October lecture.
For Dr. Barr’s lecture, we chose to echo the bombastic pop iconography typified in Godzilla, Mothra and Gamera posters during the 1960s era of monster movie classics.
